Rare
Painted Pottery Jar with Molded Decoration
Khmer,
Pre Angkor (6th - 8th Century)
10
1/4" (26 cms.) high
Item

Drawing
below illustrates in cross-section the construction of this jar.
This is the only know example of a jar from this period with this
construction. It is also rare to find molded decoration on jars
of this type an it is believed to be from a royal tomb.
Ii
is conjectured that the jar would have been filed with water from
below by immersing the jar right side up in a pool of water to a
depth above the lip on the inner tube.
There
is a repair on the lip and foot.
