Rare Painted Pottery Jar with Molded Decoration

Khmer, Pre Angkor (6th - 8th Century)

Drawing below illustrates in cross-section the construction of this jar. This is the only know example of a jar from this period with this construction. It is also rare to find molded decoration on jars of this type an it is believed to be from a royal tomb.

Ii is conjectured that the jar would have been filed with water from below by immersing the jar right side up in a pool of water to a depth above the lip on the inner tube.

There is a repair on the lip and foot.
